OVERHEARD

"When the candidates come to California ... there will be significant organizing, including candlelight memorials, 'die-ins' where people go limp and block traffic and block sidewalks. They will be forced to address the issue. We have hundreds of thousands of American lives at stake and all the candidates say is, 'It's a tragedy and we should do better.'

-Paul Boneburg of San Francisco's Mobilization Against AIDS.

"We were all a bit self-conscious at the beginning on the day we shot the scene, which is what the script demanded of the characters, too. Then as the scene wore on we all became more comfortable, as did our characters. All the same, we had a closed set with only the cast members and crew present. I'm sure it will be edited very conservatively."

Actress Sagan Lewis, who portrays Dr. Jackie Wade on NBC's St. Elsewhere on the upcoming March 17 episode where the characters will perform surgery in the nude.

"They'd throw in chicken bones and mashed potatoes. They'd pour in beer. We'd find condoms both new and used and already chewed tobacco. But the worst was a dead cat somebody threw in."

Jean Humphrey, tollbooth supervisor at the Dade County Turnpike Extension tollbooth, on what people used to throw in the toll baskets before the booths moved away from the honor system and erected barrier arms.

"Your cover story 'Flying Down To Florida: Where The Boys Are' (Issue 490) should have been titled 'Flying Down To Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and the Keys.' Your blatant disregard for the rest of the state is inexcusable!"

Tampa residents Scott A. Kjeer and H. Thom Lewis in a letter to The Advocate which appeared in their 3/15/88 edition.

"Many reasonable people are opposed to mandatory testing for the very reason you have stated. Add another: Although confidentiality is promised, medical records sometimes fall into the wrong hands and an innocent positive result can be ruinous. I haven't even mentioned the cost of the tests which can be a heavy financial burden."

Syndicated advice columnist Ann Landers in her 3/4/88 response to "Celibate In D.C." who falsely tested positive on two consecutive private lab HIV antibody tests.

"God deliver us from these pompadour boys hair done, nails done, fresh from the beauty shop preaching the gospel."

Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart in criticism of Jim Bakker's extramarital tryst during a "California Crusade" last March.

"By the way, Jackson has been criticized by some gay activists in Iowa for consistently referring to the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights as the 'March Against AIDS.' The judgement of the prehensile morons who orchestrated Jackson's appearance during the March is proven wrong again."

-New York Native's Thomas J. Jackson in his 2/29/88 "Stonewalling" column.

"There's no ax to grind. The whole world ... everyone is working on the problem of this virus causing AIDS. There is nobody that doesn't work on this virus as causing AIDS. Nobody! Every virologist on earth will tell you the same thing. This is the cause of AIDS. I don't know a single person that debates that. There is always somebody that can pull up to make some trouble! I mean the virus is created in my lab. Or even though we predicted that a virus like this couldn't cause it, OK, well, it has caused it, but maybe the French found it first. I mean, it is one goddamn event after another. It's like a no-win situation. Everyone knows that this is the cause of AIDS. Except maybe two people. There is no debate, Call 5,000 scientists and ask."

HIV co-discoverer Dr. Robert Gallo addressing charges that HIV is not the cause of AIDS in the 2/88 edition of Spin magazine.
